2018 Tennis Predictions
A new dawn is approaching after a year of nostalgic throwbacks for the old guard as well as unexpected surprises from newcomers. 2017 featured the return to the top for the legendary duo and rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, who both dominated all the Grand Slam tournaments to an extent that it created a throwback to their respective heydays in the first decade of the 2000s. On the women’s side, surprises were thrown everywhere as the No.1 ranking changed hands multiple times between five women while there were massively surprising Grand Slam breakthroughs for talented youngsters Jelena Ostapenko and Sloane Stephens.

Aug 24, 2018 Expert Picks and Predictions for the US Open Women’s Singles Tournament Running from August 27 to September 9 2018 Zachary Cohen (Sports Illustrated) – Serena Williams Cohen seemed to have resigned to the line of thinking that there’s no point in picking another player to win the women’s side than Serena Williams. Serve myths debunked: Former Top 100 ATP Pro, Jeff Salzenstein, is exposing 3 common myths that could be crippling your serve potential. Most players make at.
Looking at the new year of 2018, the return of multiple huge stars of the sports from injuries and personal issues like Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Stanislas Wawrinka, Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka has definitely created an exciting, buzzing outlook for the new season which will feature plenty of titanic battles between players of all ages and styles for the top honours. This will surely be a season of tennis one shouldn’t miss out on if possible.

Defending champion Roger Federer is the heavy favourite to further expand his legendary collection of majors, particularly with closest rival and world number one Rafael Nadal suffering from fitness issues every once in a blue moon but the returning Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Stanislas Wawrinka as well as the emerging trio of Grigor Dimitrov, Alexander Zverev and Dominic Thiem could gatecrash the dominance of the legendary duo here. I’m tipping a rejuvenated, well-rested Djokovic to capture his seventh title in Melbourne to reestablish his dominance Down Under in yet another classic duel against defending champion Federer.
Quarterfinals: Nadal vs Kyrgios, Djokovic vs A.Zverev, Dimitrov vs Del Potro, Goffin vs Federer
Semifinals: Kyrgios vs Djokovic, Del Potro vs Federer
Final: Djokovic vs Federer Winner: Djokovic

Defending champion Serena Williams’ first Grand Slam appearance since giving birth to her daughter will be a title defence in Melbourne. Her ranking has since fallen to the 20-30 region but she remains heavily favoured against anyone on tour. Longtime rival Maria Sharapova could finally find her best form since her doping ban, consistency could aid current no. 1 Simona Halep, defending Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza has the ability and confidence to continue her ascension while recent WTA finals winner Caroline Wozniacki could maintain her year-end momentum from 2017. I’m going with the wildcard pick of Wozniacki carrying her momentum to finally end her Grand Slam drought in a surprise final against fan favourite and surprise finalist Johanna Konta.
Quarterfinals: S.Williams vs Barty, Svitolina vs Wozniacki, Sharapova vs Garcia, Konta vs Bencic
Semifinals: Barty vs Wozniacki, Garcia vs Konta
Final: Wozniacki vs Konta Winner: Wozniacki

King of Clay, Rafael Nadal romped to a relentless, dominant triumph in Paris yet again to secure an extraordinary, record-breaking tenth French Open title without losing a single set along the way. The King of Clay has only been beaten on the red dirt by his fellow Big Five rivals (Federer, Djokovic, Murray, Wawrinka )when he isn’t in peak condition. The mantle is likely to be passed to the rising Dominic Thiem who has dominated several clay court tournaments in recent years while the likes of Nick Kyrgios and Alexander Zverev could also put up a good fight against the Spaniard. Title number eleventh in Paris and major number seventeen is certainly beckoning here.
Quarterfinals: Nadal vs Nishikori, Murray vs A.Zverev, Djokovic vs Wawrinka, Thiem vs Federer
Semifinals: Nadal vs Murray, Djokovic vs Thiem
Final: Nadal vs Thiem Winner: Nadal

The outcome of 2017’s final was the biggest surprise of the WTA tour in that season as relatively unknown but talented youngster Jelena Ostapenko raced through the draw and overpowered clay court specialist and favourite Simona Halep in the final. That being said, most of the more experienced and higher ranked players should be back in form for this tournament. Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova should be closer to the peak of their powers, while Garbine Muguruza, arguably the most experienced young player and being very comfortable on clay should also have a strong claim to the title here. However, Maria Sharapova has a good record in Paris having triumphed twice in the past and I’m backing her to get one over fierce rival Serena in a tightly contested affair despite their one-sided head-to-head record favouring the American.
Quarterfinals: S.Williams vs Garcia, Pliskova vs Svitolina, Halep vs Sharapova, Ostapenko vs Muguruza
Semifinals: S.Williams vs Svitolina, Sharapova vs Muguruza
Final: S.Williams vs Sharapova Winner: Sharapova

Most Grand Slams are synonymous with a particular player, and just as Roland Garros is to Rafael Nadal and the Australian Open is to Novak Djokovic, Wimbledon has been all about Roger Federer. The Swiss capped off a phenomenal year by racing through the entire draw without losing a single set to recapture arguably his favourite major after a five year drought. There are a couple of big servers who thrive on the fast grass courts and could have a say here while Djokovic, Murray and Nadal all possess the experience of winning here in the past. Federer is most definitely the greatest grass court tennis player of all time and I see him breaking records as usual by edging past fierce rival Djokovic to defend his crown and seal a mouthwatering 9th title at SW19 and 20th Grand Slam overall.
Quarterfinals: Raonic vs A.Zverev, Cilic vs Djokovic, Dimitrov vs Isner, Murray vs Federer
Semifinals: Raonic vs Djokovic, Isner vs Federer
Final: Djokovic vs Federer Winner: Federer

Garbine Muguruza consolidated her place as one of the top players in the game and as the current best in the younger generation of female tennis players by defeating Venus Williams to secure her second Grand Slam title. It will not be so straightforward in 2018, particularly with the ever-dominant, record-breaking Serena Williams returning. Other seasoned veterans in Maria Sharapova and Petra Kvitova has triumphed at SW19 in the past and could be back to their best by the summer. Taking everything into consideration, I have a feeling that this tournament will be exactly where Serena Williams equals Margaret Court’s all-time leading record of total majors won while moving closer to regaining her No.1 ranking.
Quarterfinals: Sharapova vs Pliskova, Keys vs S.Williams, Konta vs Kvitova, Barty vs Muguruza
Semifinals: Pliskova vs S.Williams, Kvitova vs Muguruza
Final: S.Williams vs Kvitova Winner: S.Williams

The US Open has been the Grand Slam tournament featuring the most surprises in recent years, with Kevin Anderson’s surprise run to the final before losing to Rafael Nadal a prime example of that. Many players on the cusp of breaking through will surely fancy their chances of breaking through here with the likes of Juan Martin Del Potro and Marin Cilic surprising the world in recent years against the generally favoured big guns. I am picking Andy Murray to defeat Grigor Dimitrov in the final to secure his fourth Grand Slam title and second in Flushing Meadows to complete a return to dominance of the traditional Big Four of this era, with Dimitrov edging ever closer to a maiden Grand Slam triumph set to take place in the near future.
Quarterfinals: Nadal vs Murray, Kyrgios vs Djokovic, Dimitrov vs Del Potro, Sock vs Federer
Semifinals: Murray vs Djokovic, Dimitrov vs Federer
Final: Murray vs Dimitrov Winner: Murray

Just as mentioned above, the women’s section went one further than the men’s in providing more surprises, with Sloane Stephens delighting the local fans to secure an unlikely first Grand Slam by defeating fellow American and debutant finalist Madison Keys. It was a great year for American women who also went on to win the Fed Cup, and the local crowd could once again play to their strengths, but with the legendary Serena Williams leading the domestic charge this time around. In my biggest surprise pick of the year, Victoria Azarenka will finally shrug off all her fitness and personal issues to end the year with a return to Grand Slam winning form, securing just her third major despite being one of the most complete, talented competitors on tour.
Quarterfinals: Wozniacki vs Azarenka, Stephens vs S.Williams, Svitolina vs Halep, Vandeweghe vs Muguruza
